SYSTEMS DESIGN/ARCHITECT, SR. - REQUISITION # 2014-503

The Systems Design/Architect, Sr is a key member of the architecture team focused on messaging system functionality and related products for Meteorcomm’s Interoperable Train Control Messaging (ITCM) system which is the primary message transport tool for Positive Train Control (PTC). The specific duties of the position of Systems Design/Architect, Sr. include the following:

  • Serves as the Product Owner and Systems Architect for Messaging related products by outlining “what” should be delivered by development.
  • Participates in the gathering, clarification, and prioritization of features, requirements and use cases for hardware and software (may require travel to customer locations).
  • Creates conceptual design solutions that will balance customer goals and needs with technical constraints.
  • Sets priorities for our product development efforts to meet business needs.
  • Works with the Product Manager and Scrum Teams to find the best business responses to emergent issues.
  • Ensures that architectural solutions will support current and future strategic needs as well as system interface requirements
  • Supports security initiatives assisting internal and industry level teams to help promote best practices and drive the group towards a solution that supports security standards.
  • Ensures that the messaging system solution works well with other portions of the overall system.
  • Clearly communicates designs / changes to technical teams including engineering, testing, and customer organizations.
  • Supports customer services advising on the deployment of Meteorcomm products and solutions as well as customer issues.
  • Creates conceptual engineering design solutions.
  • Apply knowledge of communication networks / protocols, e.g. TCP/IP, SNMP, SSH, SIP, PPPoE, CSMA/CD, NTP, MPLS.
  • Utilizes middleware architectures and products, and agile development processes.
  • Works with Linux operating system, RF networks, protocols, and hardware, as well as messaging solutions, e.g. RHEL MRG / AMQP, Qpid, JMS, MQTT, STOMP, RabbitMQ, DDS, XMPP.
  • Applies Network Security Practices, e.g. TLS, X.509, PKCS, SMPK, SASL and experience and knowledge of communications system development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or foreign equivalent).
  • A minimum of 7 years’ progressive experience which must include at least 7 years’ experience in each of the following:
  • Software development experience (C / C++ preferred) in communications system development which must include at least 5 years in an architect role
  • Work independently within a team-oriented environment of primarily engineers and technical people, including customer representatives
  • Guide and influence development teams to ensure that developments deliver features and user stories that satisfy product requirements
  • Communication networks and protocols including TCP/IP, SNMP, SSH, SIP, PPPoE, CSMA/CD, NTP, and MPLS
  • Network Security Practices including TLS, X.509, PKCS, SMPK, and SASL
  • Middleware architectures and products
  • Verbal and interpersonal communication and writing skills including presenting to executive level
  • Agile development process
  • Linux operating system
  • Messaging solutions including RHEL MRG / AMQP, Qpid, JMS, MQTT, STOMP, RabbitMQ, DDS, and XMPP
  • RF networks, protocols, and hardware
  • PTC within the context of railroad operations
